VERITAS MODEL PROHIBITION OF TORTURE Bill, 2021

Memorandum

This Bill will proclaim the Government’s abhorrence of torture and the infliction of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, and will make the infliction of torture a crime in Zimbabwean law.  It will also provide for Zimbabwe to accede to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment of 1984 and its optional protocol of 2002.  In addition, the Bill will amend various statutes to give effect to the Convention.
