PRACTICE DIRECTION NUMBER 1 OF 2018
SECURITY FOR COSTS GIVEN UPON FILING ELECTION PETITIONS
1. Application
This practice direction applies to Election petitions filed pursuant to the 2018 harmonized elections held in Zimbabwe on Monday, 30 July 2018.
2. Security for costs given upon filing election petitions a. In terms of section 168 (3) of the Electoral Act [CAP 2: 13] as read with section 28 of the Electoral Regulations, 2005, the Registrar is required to fix an amount of security for costs being not less than the amount prescribed by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (the Commission) after consultation with the Honourable Chief Justice.
b. After the necessary consultations, the amount prescribed for petitions filed consequent to the 30 July 2018 harmonized elections is:-
i. US$1 000 for local authority election petitions;
ii. US$2000 for Nationa: Assembly election petitions; and
iii. US$5000 for Presidential election petitions
