BILL WATCH

PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEES SERIES 13/2014

[14th March 2014]

Committee Meetings Open to the Public 17th to 20th March

Only one Parliamentary committee meeting will be open to the public during the week commencing Monday 17th March:-

Monday 17th March at 2 pm

Portfolio Committee: Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare

Oral evidence from Zimbabwe Urban Workers Council on challenges being faced by its members and possible solutions.

Committee Room No 1

Chairperson: Hon Chikwama                    Clerk: Ms Masara

Members of the public may attend the meeting, but as observers only, not as participants, i.e. they may listen but not speak.  The meeting is at Parliament in Harare.  If attending, please use the entrance on Kwame Nkrumah Ave between 2nd and 3rd Streets and note that IDs must be produced.

The above details are based on the latest information from Parliament.  But, as there are sometimes last-minute changes to the meetings schedule, persons wishing to attend should avoid disappointment by checking with the committee clerk [Ms Masara] that the meeting is still on and open to the public.  Parliament’s telephone numbers are Harare 700181 and 252940/1.

Reminder

Members of the public, including Zimbabweans in the Diaspora, can at any time send written submissions to Parliamentary committees by email addressed to clerk@parlzim.gov.zw

What Other Committees Will be Doing

All the other thematic and portfolio committees are also scheduled to meet during the week, but for fact-finding visits or for closed meetings to which the public will not be admitted.  For example:

- the Electoral Amendment Bill and the National Prosecuting Authority Bill will be considered by the Portfolio Committee on Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs [soft copies of both Bills are available from the addresses at the end of this bulletin].  The Electoral Amendment Bill has had its First Reading in the Senate and received a non-adverse report from the Parliamentary Legal Committee.  The Second Reading speech by the Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs is listed for Tuesday 25th March.  [Bill Watches 11 and 12/2014 of 4th March summarised the Electoral Amendment Bill, commented critically on its constitutionality and noted omissions and areas needing further attention.]

- the Thematic Committee on HIV/AIDS will be considering its itinerary for visits to ART Roll Out Centres and a brief from Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights on their intervention on HIV.

- the Portfolio Committee on Health and Child Care will be paying a fact-finding visit to the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
