In the first chapter the report gives an account of what culminated to the military shootings. On 1 August 2018, following the delay in pronouncing the 2018 presidential election results, the military was deployed in Harare CBD’s streets to ‘disperse’ demonstration.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Zimbabwe is constitutionally a republic. The country elected Emmerson Mnangagwa president for a five-year term in July 2018 in general elections. Despite incremental improvements from past elections, domestic and international observers noted serious concerns and called for further reforms necessary to meet regional and international standards for democratic elections.

Rights Behind Bars - A Study of Prison Conditions in Zimbabwe

The primary objectives of this study were to assess the compliance of selected prisons with international and domestic standards on conditions of detention; to consolidate the findings from the prison monitoring project conducted by the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum (the Forum) and its membership; to make recommendations for reforms and propose key priority areas.
